Texas Board of Nursing Rule 216.3 โ€“ CNE Over Older Adult or Geriatric Care

As of January 1, 2014, the Texas Board of Nursing requires that any nurse whose practice includes older adult or geriatric populations must complete at least 2 contact hours of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) in older adult or geriatric care during each licensing period.

What Topics Can Be Covered?

These CNE hours may include content related to:

  • Elder abuse
  • Age-related memory changes and disease processes (including chronic conditions)
  • End-of-life issues
  • Health maintenance
  • Health promotion

Additional Notes:

  • These 2 contact hours do count toward the total 20 contact hours of CNE required for license renewal.
  • Nurses with board-approved certification in older adult or geriatric care may use their certification to fulfill this specific requirement.
