Nursing of the Geriatric Patient

This online continuing nurse education course has been designed to promote optimal nursing care for geriatric patients by providing current concepts that uphold safe nursing practice in this patient population. This course is applicable to all nursing practice settings in which elderly patients are served. This course provides 2 contact hours of continuing education and is accredited for nurses in all states.

This CNE course meets the continuing education requirements set forth in the Texas Board of Nursing Rules. These rules state that all nurses whose practice includes older adults or geriatric populations must complete at least two contact hours related to the older adult or geriatric care every licensure renewal cycle. These contact hours are included in the required 20 contact hours per licensure renewal cycle per the Texas Board of Nursing. Other states may or may not have a specific requirement for course content related to geriatric care.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Recognize at least 3 types of elder abuse.
  2. Identify at least 2 types of age related memory changes.
  3. Distinguish between age related and disease related memory changes.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of age related physiological changes.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of chronic diseases common in the elderly population.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of medication metabolism in the elderly.
  7. Be able to discuss end of life issues.
