Continuing Education Requirements for California Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs)

California Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) play a vital role in providing quality care in a variety of healthcare settings. To maintain an active certification, CNAs must stay current with their skills and knowledge by completing regular continuing education. Understanding the specific continuing education requirements is essential to avoid lapses in certification and to ensure compliance with both state and federal regulations.

California CNA Continuing Education Requirements

According to California Health & Safety Code, Section 1337.6 (a)(1), CNAs are required to complete 48 hours of in-service training or continuing education every two years. Of those 48 hours:

  • At least 12 hours must be completed in each year of the two-year certification period.
  • Up to 24 hours may be completed through an online computer training program that is approved by the Licensing and Certification Division of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

It is important for CNAs to document their completed hours accurately on their certification renewal form (CDPH 283C) and to retain documentation of completed courses for four years in case of audit.
