CPR a Link in the Chain of Survival
More than 380,000 Americans each year are assessed by EMS for sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that is used when helping someone who may have had a heart attack or stopped breathing. The chain of survival involves various participants from bystanders, family members, 911 dispatchers, pre-hospital care givers, hospital staff, to post hospital caregivers. Each person in the chain of events provides a variety of skills and responsibilities that adds to the chain of survival. A bystander who calls 911 to summon emergency assistance to a person who may have collapsed because of cardiac arrest potentially forms the first link in the Chain of Survival. The chain begins with the ability to immediately recognize a cardiac arrest and activate emergency response. The American Heart Association recommends that everyone, untrained bystanders, and medical personnel alike, begin CPR. Successful outcomes of each link of the chain are accomplished because of early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation with an AED, advanced life support, and the people who know how to perform these actions. In communities where there is an awareness of early interventions, survival rates increase. Make sure each staff member in your facility is trained to quickly recognize an emergency and initiate initial CPR efforts.
