Arkansas Board of Nursing IV Education Requirements

Intravenous (IV) therapy is a critical component of patient care, and in Arkansas, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Licensed Psychiatric Technician Nurses (LPTNs), and nursing students must meet specific educational guidelines to perform these responsibilities safely and legally. The Arkansas State Board of Nursing (ASBN) provides a clear framework to ensure that IV therapy is only performed by individuals who are adequately trained and demonstrate validated competencies.

📚 Required Training Content for IV Therapy

According to the ASBN Guidelines for Teaching Content Related to IV Therapy, minimum training must include comprehensive instruction and hands-on competency in the following areas:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the vascular system
  • Fluid and Electrolyte Balance principles
  • Use of equipment and procedures involved in IV therapy
  • Recognition and management of complications, including prevention strategies and nursing interventions
  • Peripheral IV insertion techniques (on adult clients)
  • Procedures to set up, replace, and remove IV tubing for both gravity and pump infusion systems
  • Accurate IV infusion calculations and the ability to adjust flow rates
  • Monitoring of blood and blood product administration
  • Administration of medications via:
    • IV piggyback (IVPB)
    • IV push, provided that the medications do not require the advanced judgment and skill reserved for RNs

These guidelines are grounded in national nursing standards and Arkansas state law, ensuring safe and effective delegation of IV-related tasks from RNs to appropriately trained LPNs or students.

🚫 Important Limitations

While LPNs/LPTNs can perform many IV-related tasks, RNs may not delegate procedures that require substantial specialized skill, judgment, or knowledge—as defined in the Arkansas Nurse Practice Act and Board Position Statement 98-6.
