Aging Correctional Population Drives Need for Dementia Awareness

With the ageing population in Australia’s correctional facilities growing more rapidly than the general population, measures to deal with the growing issue of dementia in prisons look set to be critical, according to a new discussion paper released by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW.

Titled Dementia in Prison, the paper found corrective service authorities across Australia need to respond to dementia among inmates as a matter of urgency.

The report recommended that corrective service authorities across the country “make changes to the physical, social and structural environment of prison settings, where there are significant numbers of prisoners with dementia, to reduce the behaviors of dementia and accommodate the needs of ageing prisoners with dementia.”
