Scene Safety: Crime Scene Awareness for EMTs

This continuing education course is designed for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-Basic through Paramedic) who may encounter violent or criminal environments in the line of duty. The course explores methods to recognize potentially dangerous situations, perform safe scene size-ups, and effectively coordinate with law enforcement. Topics include scene approach, gang and drug activity awareness, responding to domestic violence and terrorism-related scenes, tactical safety, evidence preservation, and proper documentation. EMTs will gain practical strategies to maintain personal and crew safety while ensuring quality patient care in crime-related settings.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize behavioral indicators that suggest potential violence or escalation.
  2. Differentiate between safe and unsafe actions when entering or operating within a crime
  3. Describe the essential components of a thorough scene size-up beginning at dispatch.
  4. Distinguish between fight, flight, and freeze responses and apply the safest course of action.
  5. Explain how to ensure safety and evidence preservation during roadway and mass-violence responses.
  6. Identify proper evidence preservation and documentation methods for crime-scene patient care.
