Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders: EMS Recognition and Management

This Texas EMS continuing education course provides emergency medical providers with essential knowledge and skills for recognizing, assessing, and managing epilepsy and other seizure disorders in the prehospital setting. Learners will explore seizure pathophysiology, common causes, seizure classifications, and evidence-based treatment strategies, including airway management, postictal care, and identification of high-risk patients. Special focus is given to status epilepticus, pediatric and neonatal seizures, pregnancy-related seizures, and appropriate transport and refusal-of-care decision-making.

Through practical case studies and real-world EMS scenarios, participants will gain the confidence to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective care to seizure patients while improving clinical outcomes and scene safety. This course supports EMS providers in making informed, protocol-driven decisions during one of the most common neurological emergencies encountered in the field.
