Colorado Legalities of Infusion Therapy

It is imperative that all nurses understand the rules and regulations set forth by the state that governs the nurse’s practice. Each state has rules and regulations that differ from one another, therefore it is necessary for each nurse to know the specific state(s) in which he or she practices; guidelines, rules, and laws. The following information guides facilities, organizations, and all licensed nurses regarding the board’s guidelines pertaining to infusion therapy practices. The Colorado State Board of Nursing, through the nurse practice act, scope of practice, and Board policies. This course will guide you through the Colorado State Board of Nursing website to all documents that impact the provision of infusion therapies by nurses. It is always recommended that the Board’s website be checked independently as any state board can append, amend and change the rules and regulations that nurses are expected to follow.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. List the 2 components required for the LPN to practice IV therapy in the state of Colorado. 
  2. Describe the importance of the content of employer’s policy and procedures.
  3. State 3 IV related tasks that are stated by the Colorado Board of Nursing to be outside of the LPN’s Scope of Practice.
  4. Recite 4 IV related tasks that are within the LPN scope of practice.
  5. Define an "adult client" according to Rule 1.9 as it pertains to LPNs and the practice of IV therapy.
