Sexual Assault Victims: Role of the Nurse

The purpose of this course is to educate nurses on best practices in caring for sexual assault victims. This course is designed for nurse clinicians and nurses caring for sexual assault victims to enhance their knowledge of procedures and approaches with regards to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner or SANE that can minimize trauma, promote healing, and enhance the likelihood that perpetrators can be brought to justice.

Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the scope of the problem related to sexual assault and its reporting in the United States.
  2. State the role or roles of nurses caring for sexual assault victims.
  3. Summarize the role and education of a sexual assault nurse examiner.
  4. Name the components that sexual assault evidence collection kits must contain at a minimum.
  5. Discuss the risks for pregnancy, HIV contraction, and STD prevention as well as prevention when possible following sexual assault.
  6. Recall ways the nurse can create a therapeutic milieu for a sexual assault survivor.
