Postpartum Hemorrhage Management for the Emergency RN

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) can happen to any woman that has just given birth. The risk factors for some women are higher than others, but it is a condition every emergency medicine physician and nurse should know how to identify and treat. In the United States alone, postpartum hemorrhage accounts for 12% of deaths per year. Timely diagnosis, intervention, and teamwork are critical for the patient’s recovery and survival. Almost 90 percent of deaths due to postpartum hemorrhage occur within four hours of giving birth. Lifesaving measures conducted in a timely fashion aids in patient survival. This course will provide an overview of postpartum hemorrhage, how to recognize the signs, and common treatment. At the end of the course, the emergency room nurse will be readily able to recognize and treat PPH patients who present to the emergency department (ED).
