ICU Delirium: Prevention, Assessment, and Management

This course is designed for critical care nurses who assess and manage delirium in the intensive care unit. The purpose of this course is to provide nursing and other healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to assess, care for, and intervene on behalf of patients experiencing ICU delirium. The Nurse learner will become knowledgeable of the ICU patient risk factors for delirium, role of the bedside nurse in the treatment and management of delirium and the impact of impact benzodiazepine, opioid use, and methods to prevent ICU delirium.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify patient risk factors for intensive care unit delirium.
  2. Describe the impact benzodiazepine and opioid use has on patients in the intensive care unit.
  3. Discuss methods to prevent the development of ICU delirium.
  4. State the role of the bedside nurse in the treatment and management of delirium.
  5. Recognize the benefits of routine assessment in the patient population experiencing, or is at risk for, delirium.
