Diabetes has reached epidemic levels throughout the world. As of 2020, approximately 34.2 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and type 2 diabetes accounts for 95% of those cases. The world of diabetes is constantly changing. Newer medications, monitoring devices, and dietary guidelines are showing up in the news on an almost daily basis. Earlier detection and treatment are successfully giving the person with diabetes the ability to take control of their health and well-being, averting potential lifelong complications.
The goal of this course is to educate nurse aides, home health aides, and caregivers on these diabetic conditions and patient treatment options. Many assisted living facilities depend upon caregivers to assist residents in the administration of insulin, this course may also serve as an educational foundation to train these caregivers in the proper administration of diabetic medications, including insulin.
This course contains a skill competency checklist for the administration of insulin via vials, administration of insulin via an insulin pen, and checking blood sugar levels via a glucometer. These skills are to be observed and verified by a preceptor at the facility level.
