Tracheostomy Care for Nurses

Tracheostomy and airway management can be intimidating even for experienced nurses. This continuing education course is designed to build confidence and clinical competence in caring for patients with tracheostomies across acute, sub-acute, and long-term care settings. Through a structured, evidence-based curriculum, participants will review essential airway anatomy, learn to perform accurate bedside respiratory assessments, and recognize early signs of respiratory distress.

The course provides a detailed overview of tracheostomy indications, tube types, and common complications, followed by step-by-step instruction in tracheostomy care, suctioning techniques, tube changes, and emergency response. Learners will also explore the use of speaking valves, tracheostomy caps, and the role of humidity in airway health. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on best practice guidelines, patient safety, thorough documentation, and communication with the interdisciplinary care team.

Skills checklists are included at the end of the course for tracheostomy care and suctioning to ensure learners can apply knowledge confidently at the bedside. By the end of this course, nurses will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely manage tracheostomy patients, minimize complications, and support positive patient outcomes.
