Sharps Safety & Needlestick Prevention - Online Inservice

Needlestick and other sharps injuries remain a persistent and serious occupational hazard for healthcare workers in hospitals, long-term care, home health, and outpatient settings. These injuries not only carry the risk of transmitting bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but they also create significant emotional and psychological stress for the affected worker.

This comprehensive course is designed specifically for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), and other direct care providers who frequently encounter sharps in their daily duties - whether through direct patient care, assisting licensed staff, or managing the environment where sharps are used.

Objectives

Upon conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. State the estimated number of annual sharps industries int he United States.
  2. Define risky behaviors and identify common causes of sharps injuries in healthcare settings.
  3. Recognize which bloodborne pathogen has the highest transmission risk following a needlestick injury.
  4. State the immediate and follow-up steps required after a sharps injury occurs.
  5. Describe safe sharps disposal practices.
