Managing Dementia and Cognitive Impairment for Older Adults - Online Inservice

This course is designed for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and para-health professionals who seek to enhance their understanding of dementia and cognitive impairment in older adults. Participants will explore the various types of dementia, the spectrum of cognitive impairment, and the impact these conditions have on individuals, families, and the healthcare system. The course will emphasize evidence-based approaches to assessment, diagnosis, and management, including the use of standardized scales such as the Reisberg Scale (Global Deterioration Scale). Attendees will develop the skills necessary to provide effective, compassionate care for older adults experiencing cognitive challenges. The course will also cover strategies for effective communication, behavior management, and promoting quality of life for individuals living with dementia.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the various types of dementia and cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
  2. Identify common symptoms and stages of dementia and cognitive impairment, understanding how these affect daily living and caregiving.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of and effectively use standardized diagnostic tools, such as the Reisberg Scale (Global Deterioration Scale), to assess cognitive function in older adults.
  4. Explain the psychological, social, and emotional impact of dementia and cognitive impairment on individuals, families, and caregivers.
  5. Utilize tailored communication techniques to foster positive interactions with individuals experiencing cognitive challenges.
  6. Develop and implement strategies to manage common behavioral challenges associated with dementia and cognitive impairment, ensuring safety and comfort for the individual.
  7. Apply principles of person-centered care to enhance the quality of life for older adults with cognitive impairment, focusing on their preferences and needs.
  8. Recognize the importance of supporting family caregivers and identify resources available to assist them in their caregiving roles.

Carey Peerman

Dr. Peerman earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Concordia University Chicago (2019), a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Radford University (2001), and a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Radford University (1998). She is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives, a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, and a Registered Nurse. Additionally, Dr. Peerman also holds certificates in Healthcare Administration- Long Term Care from Mary Baldwin College, Executive Leadership from The University of Notre Dame, Six Sigma Green Belt/Lean DFSS from Aventa, a certificate in Gerontology from The University of Texas-Austin and is a Certified Quality Professional.
