Nurse performing end tidal monitoring.

End-Tidal CO₂ Monitoring for Nurses: Clinical Application and Interpretation

This continuing nursing education course provides a comprehensive review of end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO₂) monitoring and capnography interpretation for nurses practicing in acute and critical care settings. The course explores the physiologic principles of ventilation and perfusion, capnography technology, and clinical applications of ETCO₂ monitoring in both mechanically ventilated and spontaneously breathing patients.

Participants will learn how to interpret capnography waveforms, recognize abnormal patterns, and integrate ETCO₂ data into comprehensive nursing assessments to support early identification of respiratory compromise and patient deterioration. The course also addresses the use of capnography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, procedural sedation, and high-risk medication administration, with an emphasis on patient safety and evidence-based nursing practice.

Designed for registered nurses, this course enhances clinical confidence and supports safe, informed decision-making through real-world case application and practical troubleshooting strategies.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define End-tidal CO₂ (ETCO₂) monitoring.
  2. Explain the physiologic principles that make end-tidal CO₂ monitoring a reflection of ventilation and perfusion.
  3. State the normal range of ETCO₂ values.
  4. Interpret the causes of abnormal waveform trends.
  5. Identify evidence-based uses of ETCO₂ monitoring in mechanically ventilated patients.
  6. Describe clinical applications of capnography in spontaneously breathing patients.
