This course will provide participants with a review of the basic safety considerations and nursing care guidelines that help protect patients, residents and clients from complications related to elimination and toileting. This comprehensive review can be utilized for nursing assistive personnel throughout all healthcare settings, as the safety considerations for elimination and toileting do not change according to level of acuity. Within this course, the participant will review the basics of elimination and toileting, common problems of the elderly or ill that may contribute to complications with elimination and toileting, potential consequences and complications of impaired elimination and toileting, skin care for incontinent patients, residents or clients, elimination and toileting supportive devices, improving communication to prevent complications related to elimination and toileting, completing incident reporting in a timely and thorough manner, bladder and bowel retraining, and how to safely transfer patient, resident or client onto and off of the toilet.
