Elimination and Toileting - Online Inservice

This online inservice course may be taken by an individual certified nurse assistant, in a complete online format. Review the course online from any computer or tablet with an internet connection, answer our interactive review questions at the end of each chapter, then complete the final exam. With a successful completion of the exam of 80% or better, students will complete an evaluation of the course and then be able to print a certificate of completion.

This course will provide participants with a review of the basic safety considerations and nursing care guidelines that help protect patients, residents and clients from complications related to elimination and toileting. This comprehensive review can be utilized for nursing assistive personnel throughout all healthcare settings, as the safety considerations for elimination and toileting do not change according to level of acuity. Within this course, the participant will review the basics of elimination and toileting, common problems of the elderly or ill that may contribute to complications with elimination and toileting, potential consequences and complications of impaired elimination and toileting, skin care for incontinent patients, residents or clients, elimination and toileting supportive devices, improving communication to prevent complications related to elimination and toileting, completing incident reporting in a timely and thorough manner, bladder and bowel retraining, and how to safely transfer patient, resident or client onto and off of the toilet.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Discuss the basics of elimination and toileting.
Identify common problems of the elderly or ill related to elimination and toileting.
Discuss potential consequences and complications of impaired elimination and toileting.
Describe proper skin care for incontinent patients, residents or clients.
Explain how elimination and toileting devices can help prevent potential complications.
Demonstrate safe and effective urinary catheter care.
Demonstrate safe and effective ostomy care.
Demonstrate how to safely transfer a client to bedside commode using a transfer belt.
Demonstrate how to assist a patient, resident or client with using a bedpan,
Demonstrate how to measure and record urinary output.
Explain how improving communication can prevent elimination and toileting problems.
