Antibiotic Stewardship Training for Long-Term Care Facilities

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global threat, and misuse in long-term care settings can lead to drug-resistant infections, Clostridioides difficile outbreaks, and serious complications. This course provides a comprehensive roadmap for designing, implementing, and sustaining an Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) tailored to the unique needs of nursing homes and similar facilities. Through alignment with CMS and CDC guidelines, participants will learn how to optimize antibiotic use—ensuring residents receive the right drug, dose, and duration—while minimizing adverse effects and preserving antibiotic efficacy for future generations.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the key goals of antibiotic stewardship in long-term care, including improving resident outcomes and reducing adverse effects.
  2. Describe the CDC’s seven Core Elements of an ASP and explain how to operationalize each element in your facility.
  3. Define role-specific responsibilities for nursing staff, prescribers, pharmacists, and administrators in supporting stewardship activities.
  4. Apply standardized infection definitions and assessment criteria (e.g., McGeer, Loeb) to determine when antibiotic therapy is truly indicated.
  5. Design and implement monitoring, reporting, and feedback mechanisms to track antibiotic use, resistance patterns, and ASP outcomes.
