Guide to Antimicrobial Dressings and Antimicrobial Impregnated Disks
The use of chlorhexidine impregnated dressings have been shown to be effective in the prevention of central line associated blood stream infections. Both the CDC and INS recommend the use of chlorhexidine dressings for central lines in patients over the age of 2 months. Chlorhexidine dressing should be used with caution in premature neonates and patients with fragile skin and/or those sensitive to chlorhexidine. Dressings impregnated with silver ions may be an alternative, for those sensitive to chlorhexidine or in neonates.
