Texas Jurisprudence and Ethics
This instructional course has been designed for those practicing nursing in the state of Texas. The Texas legislature grants power to the Texas Board of Nursing to enforce the rules and regulations set forth in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. The mission of the Texas Board of Nursing (BON or Board) is to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that each person holding a license as a nurse in this state is competent to practice safely. The Board fulfills this mission through the regulation of the practice of nursing and the approval of nursing educational programs. This mission is derived from the Nursing Practice Act and supersedes the interest of any individual, the nursing profession, or any special interest group. To accomplish its mission, the Board has determined that every nurse shall complete a directed course in the rules and regulations expressed in the Nurse Practice act related to jurisprudence and ethics.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify at least two ways in which the Texas Board of Nursing promotes patient safety.
- Identify the at least three rules and regulations included in the Nursing Practice Act that should be used to guide safe nursing practice.
- Apply the principles of proper professional ethics.
- Discuss the differences between incident-based peer review and safe harbor peer review.
- Identify inappropriate nursing behavior that could lead to disciplinary action by the Board of Nursing.
