Nursing Care of Postpartum Patients: Addressing Postpartum Depression and Psychosis

This online CNE/CEU course prepares nurses to provide expert care for postpartum patients by integrating the physiological, psychological, and social dimensions of the postpartum period. Emphasis is placed on early recognition, assessment, and management of postpartum mood disorders, including postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, which can have significant implications for both maternal and infant health. Nurses will learn to differentiate between normal emotional adjustments and psychiatric illness, apply evidence-based interventions, and implement therapeutic communication, patient education, and advocacy strategies to support maternal mental health. Through case studies, practical scenarios, and current best practices, participants will enhance their clinical decision-making skills, improve patient outcomes, and promote safe, holistic, and culturally sensitive care for postpartum women and their families.

Objectives

  1. Describe the physical, emotional, and social needs of postpartum patients.
