Therapeutic Diets: An Introduction

This online continuing education course is to familiarize nurses and other healthcare professionals with the basic concepts of therapeutic diets, including the types of therapeutic diets that may be ordered for a resident, the role therapeutic diets play in the treatment of residents, and which foods and beverages are allowed and restricted on therapeutic diets. Proper understanding of therapeutic diets will help minimize the risk of disease and other health conditions, and reduce the risk of injury.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss why a therapeutic diet would be ordered for a resident.
  2. Demonstrate correct procedure when a resident asks for food or a beverage.
  3. Describe a mechanically altered diet.
  4. Summarize each of the therapeutic diets.
